Freeport and a Nor’easter!

Ok so this last final update for our Feb/March cruise is going to be a quick one since we didnt have an excursion in Freeport.  We did however had a couples massage on the ship that morning which was very nice!

No one in our family was especially excited about Freeport as its an  industrial port and not much to do right there.  We had also decided no excursions with B being so young and our time in port being so short.  So we had a nice leisurely breakfast in the main dinning room (cereal french toast again for me), and G and I went for a massage I had booked prior to boarding during a sale they were having. You can always book onboard too as it didn’t seem like they were overly crowded, but I wanted to take advantage of the sale and get the day/time I wanted.  My parents watched B while G and I went to do that.  It was a really nice massage and we both enjoyed it, though I still felt like I couldn’t completely relax as I was worrying about how B was behaving for my parents.  They did some dry brush scrubbing and at the end showed us some techniques if we wanted to try massage at home.  There is a push after the massage for them to try to sell you the products they used, but I dont feel like it was overdone.  I don’t like that they try to sell you all the products, but they weren’t too bad about it.  We’ve decided we would do the same massage again next time we cruise if that tells you anything.

After the massage, we went back to our room to meet up with the rest of the family and go check out Freeport. As we were getting ready to walk out the port, an officer was yelling to make sure everyone had ID or we would not be let back into the ship area.  Technically this is true at every port, but I’ve never seen it enforced before, and of course I had forgotten my ID.  Luckily we were still in the gated area so I ran back to the room and grabbed my license while everyone else stayed on land.  While I was making the trek back to the room, I noticed something interesting; ship staff were in our hall wheeling large cart of huge squares down the hall.  I immediately figured out that they were covers for the windows, but didn’t think much of it. I  figured they were to cover the windows perhaps for some maintenance (ie painting outside) while we were in port.

As expected, the port area wasn’t too exciting for any of us.  I wandered to senor frogs to check the price of a drink/food, and though it wasn’t bad, food is free on the ship 🙂  We checked out most of the vendors and bought a couple small souvenirs:  a magnet for us, wind-chimes for my parents, and then let B blow bubbles and dance to the live music.  After only about 45 minutes or so we went back on board to enjoy the quite and lesser crowds.  It was windy and perhaps if it had been calmer we would have stayed in the port area longer.

We dropped B off at the kids club for a couple hours (paid$) so we could enjoy some time by the pool to ourselves, and a couple drinks.  It was a nice, relaxing afternoon!  Shortly after lunch though, the captain came over the speaker to make an announcement;  There was some rough weather ahead as we were heading towards a nor’easter and would have to make some adjustments due to that.  Rooms on the first floor would have their windows boarded up (that explains the covers I saw), pools would be closing this evening for the remainder of the trip, and we would be hugging the coast to try to avoid the worst of the weather.  It seemed odd to say all this on a bright sunny day, but even as the afternoon passed, clouds rolled in and the wind picked up.

I should mention that a running joke on this cruise seemed to be that no one could understand the captain’s accent.   So after his announcement, Saffie (cruise director) came over the speaker and repeated the same announcement.

The next day was our last sea day and we definitely made the most of it.  We had signed up to do the Green Eggs and Ham breakfast and had a lot of fun with their colorful meals.  G did actually try the green eggs and ham, which is served on an English muffin, but it was much to unappealing for me.  Despite knowing its just a coloring, I couldn’t being myself to try it!  They also give everyone parfaits and several characters come out for photos.  B is a little apprehensive of characters still, but I went up with him to meet them all.  Overall I think this is a really fun experience to do and worth the $5/person additional charge (sign up the first day when you board in the atrium).

The rest of the day was spent doing various trivia games and wandering around.   Almost all of the decks were closed, but we did find one that was open and G, my dad and I wandered out for a moment.  The wind was crazy!  It had picked up so much even from that morning that we were surprised the boat wasn’t rocking more.  However by afternoon tea it was noticeably moving more and everyone’s drinks were sloshing/shaking.  At dinner that night people were having a hard time walking due to the ship movement and I heard at least one glass/plate fall and break.  I still was surprised though with how rough it looked out the window, that the boat wasn’t moving as much as I expected.  Due to our altered course we were expected to be delayed getting back to Baltimore, first to noon and then eventually to 3pm.  Carnival opened up phone and internet lines at no charge for people needing to make changes to flights/hotels, which I’m sure was very appreciated by people.

That evening our dinner unfortunately ran later than we hoped and we were late getting to the theater for the last show of the trip:  the finale of the Lip Sync Battle!  I was really looking forward to this as I thought it would be very entertaining.  We had to sit up on the 2nd floor due to our lateness, but luckily the show hadn’t started yet.  They had one of the comedians out warming up the crowd (or so I thought).  He was OK, but I’m generally hard to please with comedians anyway.  When he finished up a second comedian came out, and I liked him much better.  He was playing off people in the audience and making up some good jokes on the spot.  It was nice to have them out there, since I hadn’t been able to make it to any of the comedy shows that week due to little B.  After both comedians had finished, Saffie came out to thank everyone for coming and reminding everyone that the lip sync battle was being postponed until the next afternoon for the safety of all the performers.  They must have announced this at the very beginning, but since we were late, we didn’t catch it.  I was pleased to hear that they didn’t outright cancel the lip sync battle show, as I knew the people involved worked hard on it.

Back in our room that night, I gave B some Dramamine as a precaution.  Our window never did get covered up, so we were able to see the very large waves outside.  Occasionally one would spray our window as it crashed into the side of the boat.  At this point we were really rocking and I was worried B would get sick, but he fell right to sleep.

The next morning things were much calmer, especially once we passed Cape Hatteras.  The late arrival meant that we were allowed to stay in our rooms until 1pm, which meant no one had to lug bags to the buffet for lunch.  In speaking to people that day I heard of a few minor injuries due to objects falling, but according to a nurse from the medical center they hardly had any seasickness people.  What surprised me was that some guests were complaining that Carnival had “overreacted” and that the storm was “no big deal”.   Admittedly, I expected larger waves and more noticeable swells as well, but I fully believe the reason the ship handled things so well is because the captain and his crew were proactive in adjusting the course and speed so that things wouldn’t be as bad for us.  I think it would have been a very different story if these adjustments weren’t made and think Carnival did a great job with this.

I stepped out on deck as we headed into the Port of Baltimore and under the Key Bridge.  It was a calm sunny day now, though the temperature made it obvious we weren’t in the Bahamas any longer.  Waiting around to disembark did take awhile, and B was very bored, but once we got off things were smooth through customs and to our car.

Overall we had a great time on the Pride and really enjoyed the vibe of her and Carnival in general.  As former Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruisers, I was pleased to see that everything we liked about those lines was just as good, if not better on Carnival.  We are now Carnival converts and traveling on the Pride again this July, so stay tuned for that!

Nassau, folks!

Im so behind, I know.  I need to finish this trip report though because  tomorrow we are actually heading out on another cruise!  Plus I still have to catch up on our florida vacation from the fall.

But lets travel back to March now.  Its Thurday the 1st, and we’re docked in Nassau! Guests were allowed on shore around 8:15, though we weren’t in a huge hurry to get off.  We had a nice breakfast at the buffet (our usual bacon, eggs, French toast and fruit), before meeting up with my parents to start our Nassau adventure!  I had found a walking tour that someone on cruise critic had made up that hit all the main spots on the trip, and had suggested that to my parents.  Though it wasn’t a particularly long tour (less than 3 miles I think total), we had to take some breaks and it was a bit more intense than I thought.

maps
This is not the exact map I found, but it does cover most of the spots we hit

When you first get off the ship there are a variety of vendors selling things and people trying to get you to take their cab to places.  But we just walked by and out of the port area and it was much calmer. The first stop on our walking tour was the parliament building which was pretty and made for a nice photo and had a nice little courtyard with it.  After that we turned left and headed down the main road, turned right and went up past the hospital to get to the queens staircase.  This little stretch was really tiring and more trouble than I imagined, mainly because of the stroller.  The streets of Nassau aren’t really stroller (or wheelchair) friendly.  One side of the road would have a sidewalk, and then it would just stop and we’d have to cross to the otherside to find one.  It made a lot of extra zig zagging.  As someone who has been hit by a car before, it made me a little nervous.  BUT one huge difference is the motorists in Nassau compared to the US.  They were so considerate!  Several times we would be at an intersection waiting to cross when a car would stop, honk his horn, and start waving out his window.  The first time this happened I thought he was signaling us to go, but as it happened again I noticed they did this to get the attention of the other drivers to make them stop.  Like I said this happened several times and must be the way they let each other know about pedestrians in the road.  It was really nice and not usually something you see back in the states.

Once we got to the queens staircase, we were immediately approached by a woman telling us the history of it.  My dad and I stopped to listen for a moment, as I actually wasn’t sure if she might be an official welcome person associated with the city/monument.  But it became apparent she wasn’t and only wanted a tip, and was very off-put when we told her we didn’t have any cash.  She was probably the only rude person we encountered in Nassau.  The staircase was built by slaves, many of whom died working on the construction.  My parents elected to stay at the bottom with B, while we climbed to the top.  It was quite pretty, with flowers and a waterfall and pictures I took don’t really do it justice.  At the top of the staircase is a little welcome center (bathrooms) and then some stalls with things for sale, as well as Fort Fincastle.  We saw a bus here with tourists, so I assume some of the ships excursions make a stop here as well.  The fort isn’t anything spectacular, but has some nice views from it and worth the $2 or so admission it was.  We received our change in Bahamian money.

After browsing the fort for a few minutes, we headed back down the staircase to meet up with my parents and B.  They were relaxing on some of the stones lining the walkway, and had been happy to take a break.  We were all feeling good enough to move on though and headed west to the next stop on our map, which was supposed to be a chocolate shop.  We did encounter some more difficulty making our way over that direction due to construction and lack of sidewalks again, and ended up taking roads that weren’t quite on the route but close enough.   We passed several really nice buildings that had been marked as sights to see on the map, but with the construction we couldn’t really get to close.

Finally we reached the area where the chocolate shop was meant to be and it was like stepping into a quaint little village.  The street was cobblestone, lined with shops and restaurants.  Though cars were able to drive down this road, there was much less traffic there.   The whole area is called Graycliff and its charming.  As we were making our way down the road to the chocolate shop though, something caught my eye; “FREE WINE TASTING”.  Um, yes please!  A woman saw us looking and told us to come in and try out the wines from the Bahamas only winery:  Bahama Barrels.  I will try to go back through my photos more closely to see if I can find something with this woman’s name.  She was really great!  She walked us through a wonderful tasting and a mixed of different wines from dry to sweet.  And she had chocolate from the chocolate shop to pair with it for the tasting.  My son was asleep during all this and my father a big fan of the chocolate so she actually sent us home with a huge cup full of the little chocolates to have later on.  They really were quite good!  We bought a bottle of red wine as well to take.  The wines were quite good, and reasonably priced, so we should have gotten more.

After the amazing experience at Bahama Barrels, the chocolate shop was a little bit of a disappointment.  Very expensive and a super small sample to try.  Still we spent a few minutes browsing around as the chocolates and truffles really are quite pretty and my father did by a small bar to take with us.  There’s a pretty courtyard outside the chocolate shop too that we took some nice pictures in.  I did not pay too much attention to what else was in the graycliffe area, but Im fairly certain there is a cigar shop and hotel as well too.  The chocolate shop is listed as a recommended attraction on many sites I saw, but I think the winery needs to be added too and IMO was more worth the trip.

We started heading back down (literally down hill) towards the cruise terminal now, making a stop at mcdonalds (overpriced and crowded, but hey its mcdonalds) and the pirate museum.  The pirate museum is worth it if you are interested in that sort of thing.  I think my son would enjoy it now being a bit older, but was a little too young for it back in March.  My husband really enjoyed it though and always loves exhibits on nautical history.  There’s a simulated battle going on and a lot of facts I didn’t know, so we enjoyed it.

Our last stop in Nassau was Junkanoo beach and it took us awhile to find it.  I read online that you could negotiate packages with chairs/drinks, but the guy didn’t seem to want to negotiate with me.  I was surprised by this since it was later in the day at this point and people would be heading back to the ship soon.  But since his price was too outrageus for me ($50, I think), we just settled in the sand for a few minutes to relax and bought some beers on our own.  I personally wouldn’t recommend this beach.  Though the water was calm and clear, the beach itself was strewn with cigarette butts and bottle caps.  All the beer they serve is in glass bottles, so I cringe to think how many people have taken them in the water and lost them.   Im glad we stopped here and let B get some time to swim, but also glad we did not spend our entire day there too.

All in all I felt we had a good stop in Nassau and got a lot out of it.  We had fun exploring the city on our own and always felt safe.  There are some very pretty sights and some fun things to do.  Next time if we go, I would likely try to find a tour that has a good relaxing beach break with it as we were definitely tired when we got back.  But if you’re ever in Nassau and enjoy wine, DO NOT miss Bahama Barrels.

Next stop, Freeport and the exciting trip back to Baltimore.

Wine weekend

I apologize for still not finishing my Carnival Pride Review from almost 6 months ago!  I promise its still happening, and I’m writting up the Nassau port day right now actually.  I definitely want to finish as there were some fun and interesting things that happened the last part of the trip, including the lip sync battle, Cat in the Hat Breakfast, and a Nor’easter we had to dodge.

But for now, we interrupt your regularly scheduled blog reading for a side trip.

Last weekend G and I decided that we wanted to take a short getaway.  After working pretty much every weekend since April I was burned out and needed something fun to do.  We debated going to the OBX, but since we will be doing a beach trip in a few short days, we ultimately decided to head up to the Charlottesville, VA area instead.  After browsing AirBnB and finding things to be expensive, I decided to look into hotels instead. That’s when I found this total gem! Shenandoah Crossing is actually a timeshare property with BlueGreen vacations, but you are able to just rent rooms as well.  The resort is in the mountains and offers RV parking, deluxe yurts, cabins, and regular hotel rooms in the lodge.  The yurts look pretty cool online and definitely constitute “glamping”.  I found a deal on Kayak.com for $84 a night for a queen guest room and quick booked it.  Since then I haven’t been able to find any other dates that low, let alone for a weekend.

After booking I had a little buyers remorse. I started looking at the reviews and saw some mentioning the rooms being dirty/musty and very commonly that the lodge rooms were extremely small.  I started to worry that we wouldnt have room for B’s pack and play, but figured worst case scenario we could all share the queen bed for two nights and survive

When we arrived to check in, I was impressed with how pretty the lodge is.  Its so nice both inside and out!  G and B stayed in the car while I checked in and then went to speak to the concierge.  They send you to the concierge to get your wristbands and parking pass, but I’m pretty sure they do that so that she can try to talk you into a timeshare presentation haha.  I declined and she didn’t push it, which I appreciated.  The room was small, but clean and as you can see we had no issue fitting in B’s pack and play.  Upon check in they gave me info of all the daily activities going on, a map, and also a special event flyer for extra events that weekend.

We were hungry once we got settled in, so headed over to the general store to get some pizza.  They have everything you could want/need at this store too.  The flyer for that night said a magician was performing at 7, and at 6:45 while we were waiting for pizza, B and I wandered into the room it was happening in.  The magician was there and had a big set up already, but no guests.  I felt bad for him and decided we would try to come back and catch it.  Well, after we finished our delicious pizza we went back in there and it was packed!  B was bored after only a trick or two, but I thought the guy was doing a great job and the kids there were all really into it.  So I guess I didnt need to feel bad!

The resort has one indoor and two outdoor pools, a game room, mini golf, playgrounds, and an equestrian center.  B really liked the horses and had a blast swimming both nights we were there.

Since our main plan was to go winery hoping, we did that on Saturday morning.  B wakes up early, which means we all wake up early and we managed to get to our first winery, Keswick vineyards right as they were opening.  Our pourer, Anna, was great and we really enjoyed the tasting room here (pictured above).  They were having live music and a food truck later that day and were setting up for that after we left.

Our next stop was Castle Hill Cider, which on the map looks alot further away but was right down the road from Keswick.  Again, no one was really there yet since it was early and the girls taking care of us were great.  They even gave B some apple juice so he could participate in the tasting.   They had some nice ginger and other cider infusions and as it happened we signed up for their cider club.  That entitled us to get our tastings for free that day and 20% off the bottle we bought.  We’ll be back for the next pickup party in October!

We had a bite to eat after that at Horton Vineyard, which specializes in fruit wines and had a barbecue food vendor there.  They also had a little area set up for kids, which was great for B.

We did stop at one more winery that day that put a damper on our good time.  I will refrain from mentioning the name in the hopes that the owner/pourer was just having a bad day, but we were really disappointed in how non-child friendly it was.  I know what you’re thinking, “its a winery, its for adults”  but there is a whole generation of people that enjoy going to have a glass of wine and take their children along when they do so.  Thats why so many wineries have outdoor events, festivals and even movie nights.  They know it brings in money from those people.  So while many wineries will not be child-friendly in the sense that they have a play area or give them an apple juice tasting, the majority will still allow and, dare I say, welcome children there.  This place unfortunately was not child friendly in the atmosphere (a drill on the ground for repairs), or the attitude (the owner basically yelling at us when B got off his chair and ran infront of the man), so we left pretty quickly.

Back at the hotel we managed to have an ok evening.  G unfortunately wasn’t feeling well after we ate dinner at the tavern, so I took B down to the pool for a bit of swimming and then to the campfire to hear the stories and toast s’mores.  Huge shout out to the mom who was way more prepared than me and shared her wipes after B made a mess of his s’more.  We had fun with it though and called it an early night after all our excitement and fun of the day

2018-07-28 20.10.29.jpg

The next morning B surprisingly didn’t want to go to the pool!  So after a painless checkout, we stopped to the playground for a bit, said bye to the horses and began our trip home.

But of course we had to stop at a winery or two on the way back as well!  I had wanted to try Gabriele Rausse winery after reading a recommendation as they do a food pairing with their wines.  You can opt out of that, but I love food so of course we got there right as they were opening.

I honestly couldnt tell you much about the wines (though I did buy a red), but the food was great!  We were given fresh sourdough with olive oil, caprese salad, risotto, and blueberry semifreddo which B really enojoyed too.  I had never had semifreddo before, but its almost like frozen cool whip.  One thing that really amused me about this place is that they dont have their own tasting glasses and instead use other local wineries that they have collected or people brought in.  Saves money I’m sure!

We made two more stops that day.  Cunningham creek was a gorgeous place with a really clean, crisp tasting room.  The pourer there was really friendly and we sat outside for a bit and let B play before we carried on.  Our last stop was Byrd Cellars which was small, but great! They had some good apple wine and an upstairs loft with kids toys.  B played up there with anOther little girl while we did our tasting.  We joined him when we finished, sharing a large cheese and cracker plate that was only about $5

All in all it was a really good weekend.  We loved the hotel and (most) of the wineries we checked out.   We’re hoping to go back this fall for our cider pick up and to revisit some of our faves.

Check back soon for the rest of the Carnival Pride review, plus another universal and Disney trip is coming up in September!

Princess Cays- Carnival Pride day 4

We made it to our first port day!  We were definitely looking forward to Princess Cays as it was to be our only real beach day.  Before we went to bed the previous night, we all made plans to grab an early breakfast on our own and then grab the early tender with our Faster to the Fun.

B, G and I went to the buffet to get breakfast, which was pretty good.  French toast, bacon, fruit, and some really good hot chocolate were our go to.  Plus we grabbed boxes of cereal for B to snack on later.  I like that they still have those little boxes, and the hot chocolate is seriously very good.  My parents ordered room service and my dad didnt feel he had enough to fill him up and wished he had gone to the buffet as well.

Once we finished up breakfast, we packed up the rest of our beach bag (aka double checked what I packed the night before), and watched the tender boats line up.  They were right outside our room, so that was exciting for B

Since we had faster to the Fun, that meant we were able to get on a priority tender and be one of the first people off the boat.  The night before we received a notice in our room telling us this, and that we should meet in the butterflies lounge at 8 am (I think that was the time) if we wanted to take advantage of it.  The notice said that if you had am excursion to disregard, as the excursions would be the first off.  However I dont think some people read this as they came to the butterflies lounge with all their stuff for an excursion, and then eventually ended up leaving and Im assuming getting to the correct place.  If you didn’t have faster to the fun or an excursion, then starting at 7:15 you could pick up a sticker to assign you to a tender.  I have no idea how many tenders they sent off first thing in the morning, but I saw people with the number 20 wandering around.  That doesn’t mean they were on tender 20 though, as I saw people with 3’s on our boat.  There wasn’t too much instruction in the butterflies lounge as to what as going on, but there were crew members there that I could has asked if needed.  Once all the excursion people were on their way though, so were we.  There had been announcements for people to not line up in the stairs waiting for the tenders, but of course they did and had to move out of the way to let our group through.

Boarding the tender itself was fairly easy, even with the swell of the waves.  The crew were very helpful in getting people on and off if they needed it.  They can pack these things pretty full, but made sure that everyone had a seat ( and thus a life jacket, I’m assuming) before they would take off.  The ride was pretty and the day starting to clear and warm up a bit.

Once docked there was a mad rush to get off the tender boat, but basically the island was still pretty empty.  We ran into M&S from the Meet and Mingle by the map board and we all pondered a minute how to get to the quiet side.  We split up, with my family doubling back by the tender and them continuing around the corner.  All roads apparently lead to the beach though, as they showed up a few minutes after us and took chairs nearby.  Again, being one of the first groups off has its advantages as we were able to grab a group of chairs by a couple palm trees to get some shade.  They had clam shells for rent, to put over two chairs.  The price was reasonable, but I didnt think we needed one.  Our spot was nicely located near the food, but not too far from the bathrooms or bar either.

After everyone was sunscreened up, we took B down to the water and needless to say he had a blast!  IMG_2984IMG_2988IMG_2990The water was a bit cold at first, but not unbearable.  It felt good as the day got hotter!  You definitely want water shoes on though as the shoreline is very rocky and will cut up your feet otherwise.  We had fun showing B some periwinkles (snails) and hermit crabs we found, and one other little girl was very excited when we pointed out the crabs to her.  There were small fish swimming by too that we tried to point out to B, but I dont know if he every saw.

G and I went snorkeling a bit later in the morning, and the snorkeling was really great!  I bought one of those weird new one piece snorkel masks off Amazon, and I have to say it worked great.  We saw alot of different fish and found sea biscuits and conch shells to keep.  There is a life guard and at one point he and G were chatting about the fish, when we told G to “wait a minute”, went off and got a hot dog from the buffet and then threw it down into the water below him in a rocky area.  We were pleased to see a grouper come out and snatch the hotdog pieces as they came floating by.   He must hang out there a lot since the lifeguard new about him and was nice of the guard to share that trick with us.  I got some good video and photos with my goPro that I will try to share later.

As we were coming back in from snorkeling, something glittering in the sun caught my eye in the shallows.  I reached down and picked up a wedding band!  I asked around to the people who were nearby and no one had lost it.  Looking at it closer I noticed some encrusting on the band from some sort of coral or algae, so it likely had been in there a little while and not from someone on our boat.  I turned it in to Carnival guest services on the ship, and hopefully the rightful owner was able to claim it.  I was surprised with how shiny it was that no one had found it earlier, but it was probably just uncovered again with the movement of the waves/tide

Once we finished snorkeling, we dried off a bit, grabbed a couple bud light limes from the bar, and had lunch.  Lunch was typical cookout foods; burgers, hotdogs, salads, fruits, and some underwhelming desserts.  It wasnt bad by any means, but nothing to write home about either.  B was getting a bit tired after lunch, as you can see from the photo, so we snuggled him up in a towel to try to get him to nap a bit.

IMG_2991

By early afternoon we decided we’d had enough and started making our way back to the tender area.  G and I had a quick look through some stalls set up just outside of the private area, and you need to have your sign and sail card to get in and out of there.  I ended up buying a license plate, as its the souvenir I get from every country we visit.  Getting back on the tender was a little more chaotic as they scanned all of our bags and checked everything at the dock, rather than on the boat.  I did see a couple people have conch shells taken away from them, but they looked like they still had an animal in them, where as our conch and sea biscuits were very clearly long dead.  Maybe that was the difference?  In any case we werent hiding the shells and they definitely saw them.

Once back on board we put B down for a nap for a bit and all just relaxed.  While he was napping and G was in the shower, I was standing at the window watching the tender boats come in.  I must have been staring pretty hard at one spot, because all of the sudden a girl waved at me. I was momentarily caught off guard, but waved back.  Her mother then noticed her waving and must have asked what she was doing, because the girl pointed to my window.  I waved at the mom, who waved back.  So let this be a warning to anyone who has a 1st floor, mid boat, starboard side window; you are very close to the tender boats and your windows are not tinted.

At 4:15 they were doing a Build A Bear workshop, and I thought it would be fun for B.  He was a little late getting up from his nap and still tired, so he wasnt all that enthralled by it at first.  He did enjoy the cookie though (yes they had snacks)

IMG_2994

He picked out a turtle to make which was really cute.  The shell actually comes off like a backpack.  For those that are interested in doing this, they have snacks and music, and you simply put your name on a list when you get there.  They they call up about 5 kids (or adults!) at a time to make their bear so that the stations don’t get too crowded.   There are coloring pages to keep the kids occupied as well while they wait.  Its expensive for a stuffed animal, but you are paying for the fun experience really.  We opted not to purchase any clothes for our turtle, but he came with a birth certificate as well as a little backpack that B could wear to carry him around.  The ships photographer was there to take a photo.

More later on dinner, the show, and the rest of the evening!

Carnival Pride- sea day #2

Apologies for the long break, I have been traveling again!  This past week I was in Seattle for work conference.  It was my first solo trip since having baby B 2 years ago.  Im hoping to write about it as well, but in the meantime here is my overview of our second sea day on the Pride!

I didnt make it up in time to work out today, but gave myself a pass.  We once again hit up the sea day brunch.  Our waiter this day was really great and an improvement from the previous day’s brunch.  He gave us some good tips about the next day in Princess Cays (ie go to the right when you get off the ship for a quieter area), and was on top of our orders.  I decided to try the “funnest french toast”, which was french toast coated with your choice of cereal.  I opted for fruit loops and it was very good.  Others in the party had eggs, bacon, fruit plates, and pancakes.  The brunch was enjoyable and we liked it better than doing the buffet in the mornings.

There really wasnt a whole lot that sounded interesting to us in the morning, but we took B to play in Camp Ocean for a few minutes after brunch, and then to win another rubber duck.

We hit up the buffet for lunch and then I wanted to catch the lip sync battle auditions out by the pool. They had a really hard time getting contestants involved, and I was persuaded to join in as one of the 5 females. I was worried B would be upset to have me taken away from him, but he did alright. Basically they bring up 5 females and 5 males and whittle that down to 1 male and female finalist. The first round they had us showcase our superstar look by borrowing whatever items we could find to complete our “look”. I don’t have any photos of this because i was participating, but some were quite funny. One girl grabbed a large pepper off the blue iguana display and someone else had gotten a cane. I found a pink drink umbrella which was my only creative piece, plus a woman’s hat and sunglasses. Needless to say I was out in the first round. The next was I believe dancing, and then they didn’t actually have contestants lip sync until the final round. Both of the finalists were really good, but the one woman knew the dance moves to “single ladies” so she took the cake. The two male finalists, one was definitely better (in my opinion) but the other gentleman had quite a crowd following. At the last round he made it clear he didn’t want to win, so luckily the more deserving guy got it.  I wish I had some photos from this, but since I was participating I didnt take any

After lunch we wandered a bit until it was time for the Dr Seuss parade and storytime. We got to the atrium where they were preparing for the parade and decided we would skip that part and meet them in the theater for storytime. It seemed they would be going through the casino and we tried to avoid that as much as possible during the cruise due to the smoke.

Story time was cute and Saffie did a good job handling the children participants even when they didn’t cooperate. The children (and parents) were encouraged to come sit on the stage if they desired and from the crowd some kids and parents were selected to be characters in the story. I can’t remember most of the kids involved but we saw “mayor Braden” several times after that, and one super cute little girl named Vayla was involved in some other things later on on the cruise as well. B did not want to go on the stage at first, but about halfway through the story we went up there and he mostly sat still for it. If you have young kids I would recommend this. It does keep them entertained for an hour or so.

After storytime we went back for a nap, and then my parents and I went to tea time. It seemed the second day the secret was out and it was much more crowded. I was a little disappointed since I had raved about it to my parents, but the pastry/dessert cart didn’t come around this time. We had the same sandwiches and I believe scones, but no special tarts or cakes. My parents still enjoyed it though, so that was good.

B woke up just in time for us to head to the CC Meet and Mingle, which was held in the Ivory Piano Bar.  There was a large crowd there, much more that I remembered interacting with on our roll call.  They had some cakes and cookies for us, as well as coffee water and tea.  I didn’t get to chat to too many people as B was being a bit wild, but did meet a few people from the roll call, including one couple that we interacted with several other times throughout the trip  (Hi M&S!).  Despite talking for months ahead of time online, I still feel a bit awkward at the roll call.  Saffie (cruise director) and a few other crew members were there.  It was definitely one of the better attended roll calls I have been to

Tonight’s dinner was cruise casual, so we didn’t have to spend much time getting ready.  We took B to the atrium to listen to the Liberty Trio again before dinner, since he liked having a little space to run and dance.  I think this was probably our slowest night for dinner.  I don’t know why, but it took forever.  Again the same thing would happen and the table next to us would be ordering dessert when we got our appetizers, even though we all arrived at the same time.  B wasn’t having it, and we had to resort to letting him watch Moana on G’s phone for most of the meal.  I may come back and add in some photos of the menu and food, but as you can see from previous posts my photos arent the best.

Since our meal took forever, we thought we might be late to the show.  We still managed to get there a few minutes early and grab seats down on the floor to the left of the stage.  B didnt seem to enjoy this show as much as previous ones, but I thought it was very cute.  The show was called Getaway Island and has alot of good beachy songs (Jimmy Buffett, Beach Boys, etc).  It also has a story and isn’t just a bunch of singing.  There are some adult jokes hidden in the show/preshow fun, but if your kid get’s them, then they are probably old enough to.  At one point they bring out a bartender (who i assume is an actual bartender on the ship), who does some impressive tricks with bottles and cups.  I did think this went on a little too long, but maybe just because I was trying to wrangle B.  It also seemed rather obvious in this show that there were more male performers than female, as all were coupled up except for one young man.

After the show, we were tired!  My parents hit up the casino and comedy shows again, but G, B and I hit the hay early.  We wanted to be nice and rested for our fun day at Princess Cays (coming soon)!

Carnival Pride Day 2 – Trivia galore and Elegant night

We all slept well the first night on board, though I woke up fairly early at about 5:40  Since I have been working out religiously at home, I was hoping to continue my routine on the ship, but not beat myself up if I didn’t.  This morning at least, I woke up early enough to go to the gym before waking everyone else in the room.  The gym is set up interestingly, with three tiers.  The first (bottom) consists of all the cardio equipment, towels, water, and the scale if you wish to see how much you gained over the course of your cruise (the answer is four pounds). The second tier is rather small, with a hot tub and a couple weight machines.  The third (top) tier is all the weight machines, the fitness studio for classes,  and then a small area to the starboard side with dumbbells and benches.  My workouts consist of some cardio moves combined with weights (ie lunges, pushups, squats, etc), so this little area is where I hung out.  It was fine for what I needed, but I felt like I was in the way.  I pretty much took up the whole area, and while no one came over looking to grab weights while I was there, as soon as I left someone did.  That feeling, combined with the fact that it was hard to arrange time and the rocky boat later in the week meant that I only went to the gym one other time.  C’est la vie.

I came back to the room after that and B & G were awake.  I took a shower and we decided to take B up to the open play time at Camp Ocean (under 2 time)  for a bit before we met my parents for Sea Day Brunch.  Side note – G and I both agreed that the shower on the Pride seemed larger than those of our previous cruises on Royal.  B really enjoyed playing in Camp Ocean.  They had a ton of toys we dont have, as well as a play kitchen which is one of his favorites at day care.  Since he seemed to be doing so well, we opted to leave him there so we could enjoy brunch.  Some of the under 2 times are for babysitting ($) only, and others you can stay with your kid or have babysitting.  So we were with him for ~30 minutes and then left him from about 8:30 -9:30.  He didnt notice we were gone.

Sea day brunch was very nice and enjoyed by all.  I ordered a mimosa which I didnt get until well into my meal, so I opted to not get one of those again (especially considering the almost $10 price tag)!  I had the bagel breakfast which included cream cheese, onions, capers and smoked salmon.  Yum!  The rest of my family got french toast, eggs, bacon, pancakes – all the typical breakfast foods.  Everyone enjoyed the food, minus the eggs which were powdered.

img_3239.jpg

After brunch we picked up B and I believe took him to the arcade to win his first duck of the week.  Someone had told me previously about the ducks and I was looking forward to getting one.  Its a claw machine and costs $1, but its a “play till you win” game.  B got a mardi gras themed duck.   Keep an eye on the fun times throughout the week for arcade “power hour”.  During this time all games are 1/2 price, so a duck only costs you 50 cents.  All games are charged to a sign and sail card, so if you’re leaving a child in here on his/her own, I would do so with caution!

Being a sea day, there were tons of activities going on, including lots of trivia! B was taking a late morning nap so G stayed with him, while I went off  with my parents. We trivia of all sorts, so parked ourselves in the Piazza Cafe for about 2 hours to play Friends, One Hit Wonder, and Harry Potter trivia, as well as trivial pursuit.   We weren’t very good at most trivia’s, but when it came time for Harry Potter it was my time to shine!  G had showed up with B by then, and was able to participate.  G and I are huge Harry Potter fans and have read all the books and seen all the movies multiple times each.  If you’ve been my previous post about visiting Universal Studios or know us in real life, you know just how obsessed we are.   Well, I won!  I should say we won, as G provided a crucial answer about the Hogshead Pub.  And really we tied as there was a guy named Brian who got the same (perfect) score as us.  If you ever go to do this trivia, be aware that the answers are based on the books, not movies so can be a bit different.

After I won my first (spoiler: only) ship on a stick, we decided to head to the art auction while my dad watched B.  I’m sure there was some lunch in there somewhere, but I dont remember it!  In any case the art auction was different than previous ones we went to, and much too long.  They gave out glasses of champagne, but it was about an hour into the presentation.  My mom won a free work of art in the raffle, and we left soon after that because G and I wanted to go to tea time.  We had been there two hours at that point and they were still going strong.

Tea time on sea days is a lesser known treat.  Its not listed under the activities on the fun times, and instead under the “hungry for more?” section of the food information.  Its an hour long and in the main dining room.  G and I were seated with two other couples, one from Dalgreen, VA and the other from Havre de Grace, MD and we all enjoyed chatting.  I forgot everyone’s names promptly, but we saw the Havre de Grace couple several more times throughout the cruise.  We were seated by a window and had a nice view off the stern of the boat of the pretty blue waters.  Waiters came around with free teas (green, black and decaf) or a selection that you could purchase from for I think $2.  Not outrageous, but we all stuck with the free.  Next were tea sandwiches (salmon and cucumber), scones with cream and strawberries, and finally a dessert cart with a bunch of various tarts, cakes, and even an apple crumble.  We really enjoyed it and planned to come back again next time.

After raving about tea time to my parents, we took B back and settled in for naps.  Just as we were all drifting off to sleep there was a knock at the door.  Oops we didn’t put up the “Snoozin'”sign! Luckily B stayed asleep as G answered the door.  It was room service with a gift for us!  My grogginess quickly dissipated as I jumped up to see what it was.  John Heald had sent us a bunch of goodies!  A bottle of champagne, chocolate covered strawberries, and then a ship on a stick and medal for B.  G quickly claimed the ship on a stick though, saying he deserved it for the winning answer in Harry Potter trivia.

If you aren’t aware of who John Heald is, he is the head cruise director for all of Carnival.  He blogs a lot and is quite active on Facebook.  I left a comment on his page several days before our cruise telling him how excited we all were to be going on our first carnival cruise, and he responded that he would try to do something to make it even better.  Awesome!  Now, I didn’t ask him specifically for something (though I did leave my cabin number), but people do it all the time.  I feel there is some varying opinions on this and some say he is probably annoyed by requests and its tacky, while others say he loves doing it and likes to hear he made someones day.  So have whatever opinion you want on it, but I was glad I contacted him ahead of time.  I made sure to thank him as well when we got home, as well as shout out a crew member I thought deserved recognition.

B slept a bit longer while G and I got ready for the first of two elegant nights.  I know some people don’t like having to get dressed up, but I really enjoy it!  We took some nice family photos after dinner in the atrium and met some new photographer friends that got a kick out of B for the rest of the week, taking lots of posed photos with/of him.  This was also the first night we met Jennyfer, the crew member I mentioned to John Heald.  She was vacuuming the stairs and B wanted to help her.  After that we saw her everywhere; cleaning in the buffet at breakfast, collecting alcohol purchases after ports, then back cleaning the atrium in the evenings.  I feel the crew must never sleep!

Now back to dinner.  Its lobster night! Once again my menu photo is blurry (note for next trip: take still photos with a phone, not gopro).  There was the lobster with shrimp, prime rib, and seared striped bass, and really a bunch of good sounding items tonight.  I had a shrimp cocktail and baby spinach salad, while G had Italian wedding soup.  B was acting up by the time our entrees were served, so I took him out in the hall for a bit.  Unfortunately that meant my lobster was cold by the time I ate it, but was still good!  G had the striped bass which he said was “excellent”.  B had chicken nuggets, but doesnt appear he ate them.  We asked for a kids menu the first night, but they never brought us one, instead just telling us what was on it.  I don’t know if there actually is a physical menu or not.

I have no photo of the dessert menu for this night, but I know it was good!  Some kind of Chocolate cake with sauce for me, and I cant remember what G had unfortunately.  We also had the Kathy Lee Gifford Rose as our wine that night and both enjoyed it.  We actually ordered it a second time later in the cruise

After dinner and all our photos were finished we headed over to the early showing of Heart of Soul.  My parents were seated in the 4th row and there was room for us to join them and plenty of room otherwise as well.  Surprising to me considering other (Royal Caribbean) shows have been packed.  The rest of the week we found it to be the same.  Some were more crowded than others, but you could always find a seat.  We all found this show to be enjoyable, especially B!  He was up in his seat dancing with the lady next to him for most of it.  She and her friend got a kick out of him.  The cast of the show consists of 3 girls and 4 guys.  I thought this was odd all week that their weren’t even numbers, because they did often pair up to dance and one guy was always left on his own.  There is one guy and girl that are the main singers, then another pair who often sing as well.  The rest are background singer/dancers.  There is one guy and one girl that really stood out to me for the dancers, but everyone was really good.

We have been on cruises in the past where the talent is exceptional, but the show itself not entertaining, and thus we left.  I thought all the shows this week were really well done and entertaining enough that even if (keyword IF) the cast wasn’t as talented you would still find it enjoyable.  I thought all the performers were good though.

Once the show ended, we went out to the atrium lobby where the Liberty Trio were playing.  If you havent had a chance to catch these ladies, make it a point to!  The do amazing strings covers of popular songs.  We heard everything from Guns and Roses to Metallica, to Michael Jackson and Coldplay.  It was great and became our go to spot most evenings.  I had a glass or two of wine, G had a beer, and B got his own special smoothie drink as well.

IMG_2974

B was getting tired despite all the sugar in his drink, so G took him to get ready for bed.  I stayed to finish my wine with my parents and ended up playing “Name that Motown trivia”.   This was my only late night on the cruise, but it was a fun one!  We werent especially good at the game, but it was fun.  There were two winners, one who got the most answers right (bottle of champagne), and one with the most beads (4 free drinks).  Lets explain the bead thing.  When it was time to tally up scores, Saffie asked for a representative for each team to come to the center.  There they would identify the song, play it and “Naughty Neal” from the fun squad would reward enthusiastic cruisers with beads for their dancing and excitement.  Saffie also would hand off the mike to anyone wanting to sing and then we would vote by round of applause how many beads they would get.  We sent my dad up as our representative and despite his attempts Neal did not think his dancing was bead worthy.  So I went and took his place halfway through and soon was rewarded with some beads of my own.  I was standing next to a really nice man named Maurice and his wife.  Maurice it turns out owns a catering company called Reese’s catering in the DC area (@ReesesCateringServices on FB).  In any case, it turns out Maurice was quite the singer.  I forget the first song he sang, but he closed out the game with the final song, Marvin Gaye’s Lets Get It On.  He sounded great!  When I introduced my dad later, he remarked that Maurice sounded just like Marvin Gaye.  Due to his impressive pipes and dancing, Maurice was accumulating quite a large number of beads.  Saffie announced there would be a winner for the person with the most beads as well, and *plot twist* we could pass off our beads to another player!  I quickly removed the 8 or so I had and put them on Maurice and began counting what he had. I lost count several times as people kept coming and adding more.  He ended up winning with I believe 76 (or maybe it was 67) sets of beads.  Second place was a charming 16 year old girl who had something in the 50s and they posed for a photo together.  Maurice’s prize with 4 free drinks for him and his friends at the bar.  Maurice informed us that he didn’t drink but treated his wife (of course), two other friends, and me for counting the beads to his winnings.  As we were chatting at the bar and I was telling him about G and B we realized the other friends were the women seated next to B at the show!  One pulled out her phone and showed everyone a video she had taken of B standing in his seat dancing and clapping along.  I claimed a spicy pineapple martini as my prize and it was very good!  Not too overwhelmingly spicy, but a nice kick.  After that it was bedtime for me, and casino time for my parents.

Cruisin on the Pride! Precruise and Day 1: Embarkation day

We just got back late Sunday night from our 7 day cruise to the Bahamas!  It was a lot of fun and I’m ready to go again.   This was our first time cruising on a Carnival ship, and also the first time going on any cruise with a little one.  So this entry will probably focus quite a bit on those two aspects; the perils of cruising with a not-quite-two year old, and our (ok, my) thoughts on Carnival.

The Carnival Pride is based out of Baltimore, which is an easy trip for us.  My parents live about 40 minutes from the port, so the plan was just to stay at their house Saturday and then the five of us (mom, dad, me, G, and baby B) would head out Sunday late morning to start our much needed vacation.  My parents actually picked G up on Saturday morning from a dock pretty much right across from the cruise terminal, as that’s where his tugboat was moored up for the time being.  B and I left Virginia around 9 or so and after a quick stop to drop the dog at the kennel and a break for a PB&J,  we made it to my parents by about 1.   We had a fairly relaxing evening, loaded up the car and then watched a few cruise review videos to get us in the mood.  Its become a habit the last few months to watch cruise videos when we get together, but luckily there were some new ones to check out.

I don’t think anyone slept well Saturday night, but we were all ready to go and spirits were high Sunday!  Mom and I took B to church, then came back and had a nice big breakfast of eggs and sausage.  Our plan was to leave around 11:15, but we got on the road a bit before that actually.  Drive was uneventful and I did NOT pass the cruise terminal this time (though that happened on a previous Royal Caribbean trip),  so we got there I think right when they were letting people in to the lot.  We waited a few minutes in a line before they actually let us into the parking area as there were a few stragglers coming off the ship, but other than that it was super quick!  We dropped our luggage with the porters and chose a parking spot in an easy to remember location.  The check in process was smooth and we were ushered to our FTTF (Faster to the fun) area and sat there MAYBE 10 minutes.  It really wasn’t long at all.  Then were were taken row by row to board the ship and up we went!  All in all it took us an hour from the time we first pulled into the port until we were in room dropping off our carry ons.  We had a ocean view room on the 1st floor and it happened to be right above a gangway and loading area.  B had some fun watching the guys load the luggage below us.

img_3296

Since this is a new cruise ship and cruise line for us, it was time to explore!  We made our way down to guest services where there was quite a line.  Luckily we had FTTF, so there is a dedicated line for us (and other VIP guests).  We only had to wait a few minutes, and then were helped.  We wanted to switch around the people staying in each room, which he did very quickly.  Then we asked about the crib for B and they told us it would be delivered after muster.  Satisfied, we moved on.  People were still boarding of course, but we signed up for the Dr. Seuss Green Eggs and Ham breakfast, and then otherwise just made our way up and looked around floor by floor.  It was quite cold out in the open air levels, and raining a bit but not too bad!  On the Lido deck we opted for Guy’s burgers for lunch.  I had the “ringer” which was supposed to include bbq sauce and an onion ring and was alright.  I did add some extra bacon to it at the toppings bar.  We had Guy’s one other time on the ship and just weren’t impressed.  The second time my burger was supposed to have no sauce and it was still put on (and ALOT) so that I didnt even eat it.   Our group pretty much all felt that Guy’s burgers was a take it or leave it meal, and from now on we will just leave it.

We wandered by the kids club where people were registering their children for the week for Camp Ocean.  Unfortunately, B is too young to attend (by a month), but I had read they offered some babysitting hours for younger ones that I wanted to find out about.  I couldn’t find this information at all ahead of time, but here is is for anyone who may be curious.  Times of course will vary by the ship and itinerary.

Camp Ocean Under 2 services

After we finished exploring we headed back to the room to await instructions for the muster drill, which was supposed to begin at 4.  We were hoping our luggage would be there, as priority luggage delivery is one of the perks of FTTF, but sadly only my moms had arrived.  I swear I saw my bag being loaded just after 4, even though we should have been in the first luggage cart that was filled.  Oh well.  Muster was finally called around 4:30 and a bit chaotic.  Since it was cold and rainy, the drill was being modified to occur inside.  Our meeting place was to be the Taj Mahal theater.   So when the alarm sounded, we headed out the door in that direction.  One crew member told us to continue that direction, and then the next told us we had to turn around and go the other way.  What followed was pretty similar to that; many crew members telling us to go one way, and then others telling us the opposite.  When we ended up at the Taj Mahal we then were told to go outside instead.  Everyone was standing around confused on the deck, until finally a crew member ushered us onward and then we ended up at the Taj Mahal again.  Then they said we were wrong and needed to go to the Butterflies lounge, but then were corrected and sent back to Taj Mahal!   All in all quite a mess.  Looking back, I think they wanted us to go outside so that we could a) see where our life boats would be and b) to have everyone entering the theater from the same direction to keep things orderly.  But none of that was communicated and everyone seemed rather confused.  The muster drill itself was quick and uneventful and when we got back to our room a bit after 5 we were just leaving the dock!  I think the boat may have had a few minutes delay leaving, but not much at all.  Our bags did finally arrive around 5:30 so we quick scrambled to unpack a bit and change before we headed out to dinner at the Normandie.

We were seated at a booth table toward the back of the restaurant on deck 2.  We elected to have the early seating (6 pm) and actually that is later than we sometimes eat at home.  Our waiters were Troy and Dennis, who was in training.  I think our only complaint this cruise was to do with service, and I don’t even know if it was really their fault.  I’ll go more into that later, but basically we would be the first table in our section to be seated, yet the last ones to be served.

I apologize for my blurry menu picture, hopefully the rest of the food/menu photos come out better.  I had the “rare finds” Cured Salmon app, and G had the Strawberry bisque.  It actually comes out as this tiny little strawberry puree looking bit in the middle of a huge bowl.  But then the waiter comes by and pours the soup into it.  It was good, in fact all of the food was!  Dinner was the Fried Shrimp(me) and the Port of Call Beef Brisket for G.  Warm Chocolate Melting Cake for me for dessert, which I repeated several times throughout the cruise.  G and I also purchased the “cruise the vineyards” package which was 5 bottles of wine for $114 or so.  We thought that would be better for us than the Cheers package.  Cheers is the “all you can drink” package,  and includes specialty coffees, bottled water, and milkshakes.  You are limited to 15 drinks a day and everyone over 21 in your cabin has to get it.  The cost would have been over $800 for us, so we decided bottles of wine would be the better bet.  I still would have a drink or two otherwise throughout the day, but we didn’t spend nearly enough to justify Cheers this time around.

G, B and I skipped most of the shows and events the first night, as we were all a little tired.  The room got a bit cramped once B’s crib was put in, but it wasn’t too bad.  My parents went to the comedy show and felt that the comedian’s style just wasn’t for them.  They enjoyed several of the other comedians that week though!  I had ordered 4 items from the Fun Shops ahead of time for my parents, and the last of them (chocolate cake) had arrived while we were at dinner.

DCIM139GOPRO

The wine and popcorn I ordered were there when we first arrived on the ship, and a $25 cruise cash voucher was stuck in their mailbox shortly after.  There was a note with that saying it had already been applied to their account, which was nice and meant they didn’t have to do anything to activate it.  My father and I both activated the chat feature on the Hub app that night, and used it successfully throughout the cruise from then on.  Messages will only be delivered if the other person has the app running, but it gives you a notice of “delivery failed” if it doesn’t go through.  I appreciated that as my dad didn’t get my messages on a couple occasions, but I was aware of that instead of wondering why he didn’t answer.  I have seen people complaining about the chat feature not working very well, but as I mentioned we didn’t have any problems and when messages weren’t delivered I was aware of it.   The Hub app was also really nice to keep track of your bill.  There was about $18.75 on each of our accounts in refunded port fees, which was quickly spent on drinks.

We thoroughly enjoyed our first day on the cruise, and were excited to see what was in store for the rest of it!  Stay tuned for day 2, our first sea day and Elegant night!

Mischief managed

Ok finally a few minutes to talk about the rest of our Universal trip!  It was alot of fun and got quite a bit in over a short period of time..

As I mentioned on my previous post, we arrived late morning on Saturday and after a quick settling in at the room, headed out to Islands of Adventure.  B wasnt in the best mood to start and was a bit clingy.  We chalked it up to still being sick, and maybe a bit hungry!  So after a couple hours of wandering through the Dr Seuss area, Hogsmeade, and Popeye’s play area, we hopped back out to City Walk to hit up the Toothsome Chocolate Emporium.  There were some pretty rave reviews about this place, but sadly I didnt get to try it on our last trip as it was too crowded around dinner time.  Since we went at around 2 pm, there was no wait at all.  The food does have a sweetness theme to it, but you can get regular items as well.  I decided to splurge on some chocolate almond bread as an appetizer followed by s’mores french toast.  I had intentions of getting a sundae for dessert, but my eyes were bigger than my stomach and I actually had to take half of my french toast back to the room.  G got some sort of flatbread, but his highlight was an espresso milkshake.  I ordered B the kids waffle, but he didn’t eat too much of it.

Lunch was followed by a nap for all, then back to the park for a bit that evening.  A new lightshow was being projected on the Hogwarts castle and had just premiered the previous week at the Celebration of Harry Potter.  So we werent the first to see it, but pretty close!  Its a limited time thing right now, but hopefully they will keep it on permanently.  I wont spoil the show for those wanting to see it, but its predominately lights projected on the castle with a few fairy lights in the trees around the area included.  There is a large snake projection when Slytherin is introduced, but otherwise no scary elements and all ages should enjoy it.  We stood by a souvenir cart to see it and the employee was also enjoying it for the first time and was quite a fan as well

Hogwarts light show finally
The end of the projection light show on the castle

The next day was Super Bowl Sunday, and supposed to rain in the afternoon.  I got up early and went to work out, then we decided to take advantage of early park hours (a benefit of staying onsite) and walked over to Islands of Adventure again.   We opted to walk most of the time as a) our room was right by the walking path and b) it became apparent after the first day that it was quite an ordeal to unload all of B’s stuff from the stroller to get on and off the bus.  After a walk through the Hogwarts Castle and a ride on the Forbidden Journey, we hopped on the Hogwarts express and went over to Universal Studios.  We actually were on the first train of the day I believe.  We did breakfast at the Leaky Cauldron and spent quite a bit of time doing spells this day around Diagon Alley.  The only other place we went in the park was the KidsZone to let B see the Barney show and meet Poppy and Branch from Trolls.  He doesnt look it, but he was excited to see them as its his favorite movie.  I think we might have to have a Trolls themed birthday party this year

Lunch sunday was at Cowfish, another City walk establishment that does burger/sushi fusion (Get it…cow, fish).  We ate here over the fall and everyone enjoyed their meals.  G repeated his from last time, some sort of grilled tuna sandwich.  It came out with mayo on it, which he had requested be left off.  Our server was quick to get a replacement.  In fact our server there was really great, I wish I remembered his name!  B got a kids bento box, but mainly ate the fruit.  Thats ok , I had wanted his shrimp tempura anyway.   I ordered an appetizer as a meal, a tuna poke and chips dish.  It was huge and delicious!  I kept a little of that to take back to the room and ate it (along with my leftover smores french toast) during the super bowl that night.

After lunch it was nap time again.  G still needed a bit of rest, so I took B to wander the hotel complex.  It was raining a bit by then, but not too bad.  I decided to grab a glass of wine at the lobby bar at this point, since they had a happy hour special.  She kindly put it in a to go cup, so I could take it back to the room with me.   Once back G was up and ready so I suggested going back to the park.  I may have mislead him on how much it was raining, as he grumbled quite a bit on the walk over.  But once inside we got him a poncho ($10, btw) and he cheered back up.  It did not rain the entire time though, and once we got off the train in Hogsmeade, things had mostly cleared up.  The train is great to get from park to park, but also is a ride with a nice show in it.  It really bothers me that they didnt get Emma Watson to record her parts though, but what can you do.  We had a couple firewhisky and ciders, cast some spells, and then caught the light show again.

Our last full day was pretty much the same as the others.  You’re probably noticing our pattern; get up early, hit harry potter areas, let B play, grab lunch, nap, then hit the parks again.  We did the same on Monday, except we ate at the cafeteria in the hotel.  They have some very good food there and large portions so you can share.  G and B split a pizza, while I had a flatbread.  I hit the gym during B’s nap time that day, and it was completely empty, unlike when I went at 6 am.  They were getting ready for the Mardi Gras parade when we got back to Universal that evening.  All the performers were trying to get people hyped up for it and excited to hang around and watch.  They seemed to get a kick out of B, and he didn’t know what to make of all the girls on stilts.  More firewhisky was consumed and spells performed of course!  We also spent some time in Madame Malkin’s shop where I “tried on” (there are no fitting rooms) Hermione’s dress from the Yule ball, while G contemplated Neville’s sweater from Deathly Hallows.  If Hermiones dress wasn’t $300, I might have gotten it!  Neville’s sweater was more reasonably priced  ($119 I believe), but I didn’t think it lay right on G, so he ultimately passed.

Sadly, Tuesday came and it was time to go home.  Are you surprised that we went back to the parks one last time?  G wanted to check out the christmas shop and we had breakfast at the Leaky Cauldron one last time.  Another trip went by where we didnt catch any of the special Harry Potter shows (Celestina Warbeck, the frog choir, etc) but we showed up just as they finished the Triward tournament rally.  I got my photo with the Durmstrang gentlemen and the Beauxbatons ladies, but I really want to catch this performance sometime!  The Cat in the Hat was about when we walked through Suess landing, so B took a photo with him and gave high fives to Thing 1 and Thing 2.

B did a great job on the ride home.  We left about 12:30 and thats about what time we got back home.  I fell asleep alot, though not comfortably.  I could not have driven that long, but G did it no problem!  We had more stops on the way home it seemed, but they were quicker ones, especially since B was feeling better.  A good nights sleep in our own beds was appreciated by all, and now its time to prep for our next trip!  Stay tuned to hear all about the Carnival Pride 7 day cruise in a few weeks

Orlando or bust!

The first of our many travels this spring is here! We decided over Christmas break that we needed a small vacation and would go back to Universal Studios for a few days in early February. This was before I remembered the two conferences I have coming up, plus our cruise with my parents in a few weeks. So we have quite a bit going in with travel!

This week started off with a bit of a snag. On Tuesday I picked B up from daycare and he wasn’t himself. Fell asleep in my arms, not eating, and a 102 fever. He was a lot better Wednesday morning, but we still went to the Dr so he could go to daycare (make sure it wasn’t flu). Well, she did rule out the flu but said he sounded like he had a touch of pneumonia! Antibiotics were prescribed and he’s slowly getting better, phew!

Yesterday (Friday, Feb 2) I got up bright and early and took B to the in laws so I could run some errands. 4 hours later after a workout, stop at the dump, post office, and dog boarder I was back and we were ready to go. We were meeting G in Virginia Beach as he was finishing up a conference at 3 and then we were going to hit the road. Around 1:15 I got a call from him that they were done early! Luckily I was only about 15 minutes away at that point, so we met, let B run around a bit, and were on our way by 2.

My original plan (hope?) was to leave VB at 3, drive for about 3 hours and stop at a chick fil a for dinner. Eat, let B play a bit, put on his pjs, when continue to a hotel in the Savannah area, arriving about midnight. We generally followed that plan still with a few minor changes. Since we left earlier, we went a bit past savannah to make for a shorter drive today (Saturday). B also had a couple times where he got upset and had a coughing fit so we stopped and wandered around a bit. I was impressed with how well he did overall though. Even with extra stops, we still ended up at a nice Hampton Inn in Darien, Ga around 11:30 pm. After unpacking and organizing, we were all in bed by midnight.

Despite the fact that I’m a 35 year old adult, I still get super excited about things and thus it keeps me from sleeping. I felt wide awake when we first got to the hotel, but did manage to fall asleep after a bit. Around 430 I woke up and mainly tossed and turned after than until B woke up close to 6. I thought we would get up then, grab breakfast, and get on our way. But G was wanting to sleep more. I don’t know how he could with B being grumpy! Finally B started to cry so that was our cue to head downstairs for breakfast.

I do really like that Hampton Inn always includes a hot breakfast with your stay. This one was fairly typical for them, which is still a big step up from most hotel breakfasts. Fruit, eggs, waffles, yogurt, cereal, and potatoes were all available. We filled up, grabbed some coffee and cereal for the road and were on our way by 8. Later than I wanted, but that’s ok!

We stopped after we crossed the Florida line at the welcome center. They give out free orange juice and used to have alligators to see, which I thought B might like. But they are doing some landscaping refurbishments, so I think the gators are gone (at least temporarily). He got to pet a cute dog named Charlie though so all was not lost. Charlie’s Mom also took a nice photo of us (G and I at least) by the welcome sign. It’s cold out for Florida!

A short while later we made it to the hotel, Cabana Bay Beach resort. We’ve stayed here twice before and really like it. They have a family suite that consists of a kitchenette, living area, and then a separate bedroom with two queen beds. It’s nice to be able to put B in a room by himself and the fridge and microwave are very convenient. Check in was quick and our room was ready, despite it only being 11 am. We went to the room, settled in a bit, changed, then hopped on the hotel bus and were on our way to Islands of Adventure!

I should mention now that we have seasonal passes to universal/islands of adventure. We came here in the fall and I did some research and found out that it only cost $5 to upgrade the tickets we had at the time to the season pass option. We figured it was worth it to do, even if we ended up not using it. But here we are! The season pass is the cheapest of the annual passes and does have some limitations, specifically blackout dates. As it happens universal does a weekly concert series during Mardi Gras that season pass holders are blocked out of. Today was the first day of that, which meant no Universal side for us. But that’s ok, there’s plenty to keep us entertained in the Islands of Adventure side.

Lots of magic to be done, and more on this trip later!

Better late than never

I had intentions of starting a pregnancy blog. I did! A friend did one and it was super cute and funny. But I didn’t really enjoy being pregnant and no one wants to hear me whine (especially without wine)

Then you have the baby and, well, plans fall aside with that too. I was too busy trying to keep baby B alive to write a blog. But here we are, almost 2 years later and I’m finally going to give it a go!

With a bunch of travels coming up, I thought this would be a good way to document all the fun trips we have together. Or as a reminder to never try that with a toddler again. Only time will tell!

We just got a scratch off wall map (world and USA) so I’m looking forward to utilizing it and scratching off all the places we travel as a family!
